How to Pick a Consultant

There often comes a time when your company doesn't have specific expertise or may not have adequate resources to complete a project in an allotted time span. That's the time to consider brining in contract help.

Picking a consultant is a critical decision. Some of us frankly have a bad reputation for arrogance and burning a lot of your valuable time and money with little to show for the expenditure.

To prevent that from happening, your first consideration is to understand what you need. An outsider might help you refine this later, but knowing what you expect is a critical first step.

Be inquisitive. When you find a consultant, get answers to questions like:

  1. What is the consultant's experience?
  2. Does the consultant have relevant requisite expertise?
  3. What do the consultant's clients say about his/her results and effectiveness?
  4. How will this individual fit into my organization?
  5. Does the consultant have a commitment to my success?

If you feel satisfied with the answers you receive, the chances are good that the consultant will work out well.
